MISSION

The MISSION of SoCoMCM is to bring awareness to the exemplary enclave of mid-century modern architecture in Chicago’s Southland while also providing a forum (collective) for modernist enthusiasts and homeowners to gather, collaborate, and work towards preservation. We advocate for the preservation of Mid-Century Modern Architecture, Art, Objects and the Spirit of Modernism.

The Collective wants to play a catalytic role for preservation efforts and a resurgence of interest in the architecture of the uniquely diverse communities of the Southland. This is accomplished through education, documentation, outreach and advocacy for the protection and preservation of mid-century modern architecture and their historic districts. Events include social gatherings, tours, lectures and discussions on renovation/preservation strategies, modern architecture and art, landscape design and historic landmark registrations.

SOUTHLAND ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY

In the 1950s Chicago’s Southland Communities became experimental grounds for some of the leading architects of the day from George Keck of Keck and Keck to Bertrand Goldberg, Paul Schweikher and Edward Dart. Many of these arguably include their best works and today some of these examples are museum quality while others are in disrepair or endangered, yet all are illuminating vantage points into this progressive period of architecture and design that is now coined Mid-Century Modern.
